About the release

Bergmál fjallanna (Echoes from the Mountains) is the debut album by Icelandic pianist, composer and vocalist Sigurdís Tryggvadóttir. Rooted in jazz, her music draws inspiration from the landscapes and her family’s history in northwestern Iceland.

Sigurdís grew up on a farm where mountains stretch across the horizon and her family has lived for generations. Since moving to Denmark in 2017, memories of the changing seasons, the contrasts between light and darkness, and the forces of nature have increasingly influenced her compositions.

Sigurdís also explores her connection to her great-uncle, Jónas Tryggvason (1916–1983), a poet and musician who lived in the same place before she was born. His music left a lasting mark on the local community, and his poetry draws on Icelandic landscape to express his personal experiences, including his gradual loss of sight. On Bergmál fjallanna, Sigurdís has set his poems to music and reimagined his songs.

The album features nine instrumental and vocal pieces, performed by Sigurdís on piano and vocals, Mariusz Praśniewski on double bass and Péter Horváth on drums. It was produced by four-time Juno Award winner David Braid.

Bergmál fjallanna is initially available exclusively on vinyl in a limited, numbered edition of 200 copies. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl, the album comes with a booklet featuring five Icelandic poems alongside English translations by Elin Thordarson.
