About the release

Too Old to Die Young is a unique record. In six pieces it captures the sound and spirit of a generation of Danish improvisors. Here you will find music that is direct to the point. Nobody is hiding. All four musicians are giving voice to the full spectrum of their emotions and experiences. The 6 selections ooze sensitive poetry alongside the violence of lived lives.

The prepared piano of Jan Kaspersen and the electric bass of Peter Friis-Nielsen provide a contrapuntal frame around the dynamic colourings of drummer Claus Bøje and guitarist Hasse Poulsen. This is not the music of soloists stepping forward to do their trick. This is the music of four individuals discussing, talking, commenting, raising their voices, whispering together and sharing the joys and the pains of living. And live they do. To Old to Die Young is a hymn to life and music.

About the artist

JUNGLE MONEY 4 plays improvised music at the intersection of jazz and European avant-garde. They represent the closest thing to a Danish national ensemble within the field of jazz. Both Jan and Peter have been awarded the Danish Arts Foundation’s lifetime achievement award.

Jan Kaspersen is firmly rooted in the granite of jazz. Through his constant, fluid exchanges with the music of Ellington and Monk, he has developed a musical language that breaks with tradition and creates surprisingly fresh music.

Hasse Poulsen has lived in Paris since 1997 and has toured the world, notably with Louis Sclavis and Das Kapital.

Peter Friis Nielsen occupies a special place amongst Danish jazz’s many outstanding bassists. His original approach to bass playing has made him highly sought-after by the international elite of avant-garde jazz – from Brötzmann to Evan Parker.

Claus Bøje has been the drummer in three of the most significant and critically acclaimed groups in the history of Danish free jazz: Coronarias Dans, Avantis and Clinch. And now he is also a poet.
